Founded by Dr. Lawrence P. Kaplan in 1995 as Special Abilities, then evolving in 2005 into the US Autism & Asperger Association, the organization was created to help individuals navigate the challenges of autism and other related conditions. Team members hosted sixteen World Autism Conferences between the years of 2005 and 2018, with one of these becoming the largest online autism conference in world history. In 2018, the organization evolved into the US Autism Association

In 2019, the organization began recording its Video Streaming Library, which now holds over 150 hours of content. In 2021, an online conference was held during the Covid-19 Pandemic. In 2023, the organization resumed in person conferences hosting its seventeenth World Autism Conference.

Following an organizational restructuring, and under the shared leadership of Dr. Kaplan and Dr. Thurman, the US Autism Association has recently joined US Autism World Alliance, World Autism Conference, and Divergent Learning World to meet the goal of expanding the legacy and work of the US Autism Association to a broader, divergent global audience. Today, all US Autism associated names, brands, and projects, past and present, have come together under the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Divergent World Collective, Inc. Tax ID# 39-2414816.
