American Medical Autism Board Practitioner Overview Course, for MD’s, DO’s, and other healthcare practitioners at USAAA Conference

The American Medical Autism Board will present a thorough overview of the principles and practice of Biomedical Treatment of ASD’s and other developmental disorders at the USAAA 4th annual international conference in Los Angeles, July 9-12. The course will be presented on Sunday, July 12. This course will be taught by Phillip DeMio, MD, James Neubrander, MD, and Jerry Kartzinel, MD, all who are leading practitioners in the field of Biomedical Treatment. Attending part or all of the conference will accumulate credits for eligible MD’s & DO’s toward AMAB board certification.

Learning Objectives
The primary function of the USAAA conference is where parents and caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders, health care practitioners, individuals with autism, students, educators, therapists and anyone who wants to learn more about services and treatment for children living with autism and Asperger's Syndrome communities can learn about effective interventions – both biomedical and educational. USAAA assembles over thirty world-renowned experts that focus on ways to improve the quality of life for the affected individuals and their families and caregivers by conducting presentations in the areas of biomedical interventions, research, behavioral and developmental therapies, diet and nutrition, and family issues.

Conference Learning Objectives:

1. Compare and contrast our previous and current understanding of the cause of autism.
2. Best practices on biomedical and behavioral interventions and how they complement each other for effective outcomes.
3. Education on sensory processing; educational/behavioral/developmental approaches for working with children on the autism spectrum including ABA, Daily Life Therapy, Floortime/DIR, Miller Method, RDI, SCERTS, TEACCH, and ; computer-based intervention.
4. To learn about the following biomedical aspects of the Autism/Asperger’s Spectrum: the medical definition of these disorders, including features of s, immunology, allergy, metabolism, nutrition, toxicology, and brain chemistry; Diagnostic testing which sheds further light on the biomedical lesions of a particular patient’s spectrum disorder; Treatment options, including dietary intervention, nutritional supplementation, correction of metabolic abnormalities, hormonal treatments, detoxification of heavy metals (and other toxins), the role of mood-altering drugs, and possible side effects from alternative and 'off-label' interventions.
5. Information on current research and review recent peer-reviewed literature and other data on ASD. Fundamental concepts of basic medical sciences of Biology (including cell biology and anatomy) and Immunology and Biochemistry. These areas will provide parents and practitioners with a foundation for understanding the exciting research that is unraveling in the field of autism today.
6. Personal experiences on the Autism Spectrum and challenges surrounding communication and socialization.
7. Recognize that there is a possibility to improve, and in some cases, reverse autism.
